Providence is the state capital of Rhode Island, and one of New England’s largest cities. Located on Narragansett Bay, Providence is an extremely old city… founded in 1636 by Roger Williams. It’s a great place to explore by foot, and easily accessible from I-95.

I-95 Exit 21 takes you to downtown Providence where you’ll find several hotels including the Holiday Inn and Weston Hotel.
Places to Eat
Downtown Providence has a number of excellent places to dine. Visit The Capital Grill (I-95 Exit 22) for great steak and seafood. The Agora, in the Weston Hotel (1 Exchange Street) is elegant dining with a great view of downtown Providence.
Places to Go
Waterfront Park is a 4-acre urban park situated next to Providence River Park and has a nice mile-long walk. There is also a self-guided walking tour that visits some landmarks throughout the city. The Greater Providence Convention & Visitor’s Bureau (West Exchange Street) has free city guide maps for the tour. The Roger Williams Park Zoo (I-95 Exit 17) is a great place to take the family, and very reasonably priced.
Getting Around
I-95 runs right through Providence. Exits 25 through 17 will get you into the various sections of the city. Exit 20 is the exit for I-195 which also runs into Providence and continues east to Massachusetts.
